I read Book 1 in this Cinderella trilogy a couple of months ago and even though it wasn’t really for me in terms of the kinky dark erotic romance bits, the plot itself was compelling and ended on a cliffhanger which had me gagging to know what came next. Book 2 answers that questions somewhat but also doesn’t really conclude this modern day, dark Cinderella story. The premise here is that Ash, the Cinderella analogue character, has caught feelings for Winston, which he reciprocates even though they still play their humiliation kink games. This is age gap with heavy play on the unequal power dynamics as part of the kink so it won’t be for everyone. There are significant potential triggers in the lack of protection Ash receives from her father and her stepmother and in blackmail using private pictures and in attempted sexual assault by a family member. This is not a book to read if you’re not fine with dark and kinky romance. Personally, I didn’t really see the point of dragging this book out when the plot from Book 1 wasn’t really furthered in any way. This book just establishes the growth in Ash and Winston’s relationship but we’re left at a cliffhanger very similar to what we had in Book 1 with no real movement in the plot. Clearly the cliffhanger is juicy enough that if you read Books 1 and 2, you’ll definitely want to check out the conclusion of the story in Book 3. Unfortunately, that doesn’t release for another 3 months. I definitely preferred this book 2 to the first book because there was considerably more affection between the characters that made this feel less skeezy to me- however I don’t think age gap power play and the kinks featured in this will ever be my favourite. Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2Lawdy, lawdy, lawdy! K. Webster can write the heck out of a dirty romance. In Prince Charming, book 2 of her Stroke of Midnight trilogy, more of what you loved about Stroke of Midnight, the first book of this trilogy, is HERE. Prince Charming is still dirty, still edge-of your seat, and still more of Winston’s insistence that he can’t love. Add into this more of the step-brothers misbehaving, more of the Constantines, and more of Ash standing tall against Winston while falling deeper for him. As she did with Stroke of Midnight, Webster leaves us suspended on a cliff at the end of Prince Charming, so much so that I worry that Ash will make it out of alive in this series. But all of this conspires to create a book that, while dark and sometimes it hurts your heartstrings, there is a lightness to it too. It’s just plain fun even when Winston is degrading Ash and denying his feelings.Also, K. Webster has once again brilliantly woven in so many aspects of the Cinderella myth that you can’t help but smile as you encounter the ball and the shoe and the pumpkin (yep! It’s here). She has modernized and dirtied up the fairy tale in a way that makes it a delicious read.If you love dark romance, some seriously steamy romance, and a cliffhanger that makes you crave the next book, then you definitely want to read K.
